998 - THOMAS JEFFERSON PEFLEY (son of No.944) married by George ABBOTT at Dora, Wabash Co., Ind., Sept. 17th, 1863, RUTH ANN DUFFEY, born at Logan, Ohio, Nov. 17th, 1847 (dau. of DANIEL and SUSANNAH (Freeze) DUFFEY).
The following is from the Indianapolis Star.
"Wabash, Ind. - Sept. 15th, 1934 - See your mate's point of view
as often as possible; believe in the teachings of your church and don't quarrel over the petty things of life.
"That is the formula of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Pefley for a long
and happy married life. And they ought to know because on Monday
they will observe their 71st Wedding Anniversary at their farm
home near Dora, east of here.
"Born in Ohio, the two were brought to Wabash Co. when children
by their parents who settled on farms near Dora, where they grew
up as neighbors. They had known each other for years when on
Sept. 12th, 1863, Thomas J. Pefley, then 23, and Ruth Ann Duffey, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan. Duffey, appeared at the office
of Elijah Hacklemann, County Clerk, here and asked for a marriage
license. Five days later they were married.
"Practically all of their lives have been spent in the vicinity
of Dora. They started housekeeping on a farm where they resided
for 30 years. Then they moved to Wabash, but after six months in
town they decided they liked farm life better and moved back to
the farm they had vacated, and since have resided there.
"Considering their age - Mr. Pefley is 94 years old and Mrs.
Pefley is 87, the couple enjoys exceptionally good health. Both
are active about their home, but Mr. Pefley no longer handles any
of the farm work having given it up when he reached the age of
90. He is the La Gro Township Vice President of the Local G. A.
R. Post."
The following is from Florence Pefley -
"My father was a volunteer Union soldier enlisted in Co. G., 21st
Regiment, July, 1861. Stationed at Fort McHenry, Md., at the end
of three months he was taken sick with measles. He served while
sick as picket guard in the rain, which affected his lungs and he
was sent home with incipient tuberculosis. He was later drafted
into service, but owing to continued illness paid and sent a
substitute to serve in his place."
Thomas and Ruth Pefley.
