Levi lives on and operates the old Ben. Brubaker farm near
Hanging Rock, Roanoke Co., Va., on Mason's Creek. He has in his
possession an old chest used by Ben. and Susannah to store their
money and papers in during the early days.
The chest is of walnut on four small legs, and is about 8x14
inches. During the Civil War a party of Union soldiers stopped at
the house and asked Susannah for something to eat. She started
preparing the food and while she was doing so the soldiers
ransacked the house. Finding the chest locked they thought it
must contain valuables, so they took it out in the yard and broke
it open with a bayonet, scattering the contents on the ground.
They found it contained some papers and what was apparently a
bunch of rags, but nothing of value to them. So they returned to
the house and ate the meal prepared for them and went on their
way. After they had gone Susannah went out and gathered up the
contents of the chest, together with the bundle of rags. It
contained their money. The chest has never been repaired, but it
has been preserved just as the soldiers left it, with the lid
torn off and a bayonet hole in the side. During the war a battle
was fought on this farm, the skirmish that involved the Garst
farm farther up the creek. Levi has several large bullets that he
found imbedded in a tree he cut down, having reposed there since
the days of 1861-65.
