Maxwell, Iowa, Mar. 16th, 1877, died Aug. 30th, 1908 at Lake
Orion, Mich., (dau. of WILLIAM and HANNAH (Williams) JONES).
2 - June 14th, 1911 EFFIE MARGARET ALLSUP, born Nov. 24th, 1881
at Ottumwa, Iowa (dau. of JOHN REYNOLDS and SOPHIA J. (Calder) ALLSUP). Address (as of 1938); 2801 Brattleboro Ave., Des Moines, Iowa.
Prof. I. F. Neff has been at Drake University as student and teacher since 1898. He attended Earlham Academy, Earlham, Iowa.
He received his B. P. in Drake in 1900, his B. S. in 1902 and M.
S. in 1904. He did special work toward his Master of Science and Mathematics in the University of Chicago in 1905 and later did
additional work in Columbia University and the University of
Wisconsin. His first work at Drake was as Instructor of
Mathematics 1900-1902. He was a student assistant in Mathematics
in the University of Chicago 1904- 1905, and then became
Professor in Bethany College in West Virginia, 1905- 1908, when
he came to Drake as Professor of Mathematics.
He declined a position at Columbia University in 1916 and also at
Texas Christian University in 1921. He is recognized as one of
the real builders of Drake as an institution, not only through
his work as Professor but by his activities in the administrative
demands of the Institution, being Senior Advisor for the College
of Liberal Arts for a number of years; chairman of the committee
on Honorary Degrees since the formation of the committee;
chairman of the committee on Student Organization; chairman on
Freshman Enrollment; member of the committee on Student
Publications; member of the Personnel Committee, and member of
the committee on Combined Schedule and Courses.
He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of
Science; The American Association of University Professors and the American Mathematical Society. As a charter member of the
Mathematical Association of America he helped organize the Iowa
Section, in which he has filled every office on occasion. He is
co-founder of the Iowa Mathematic Teachers' Association. He has
occupied various offices therein. He is a Fellow in the Iowa
Academy of Science; a member of the University Men's Club, the
Frontier Club and the Masonic Lodge. He is also a member of Phi
Beta Kappa Honorary Society.
