There are several options: the basic 12 Marker option does not provide a comprehensive match up - but will indicate if the line tested "likely" fits in the family, the 37 marker Male Y-chromosome test will give accurate results and comparability. More extensive and expensive tests are also available, if you want to get the most complete results it is cheaper to order them from the start, upgrades to previous tests cost more. This field is developing rapidly, and tests that match up to 100+ markers are on the horizon.

The below Table indicates the counts of various markers used in (several different labs)Y-Chromosome genealogical testing.
The Important thing to "see" here is how closely the whole string of numbers matches with others, the more matches (give or take one which may be a mutation) the closer the indication is that a common ancestor exists. The 12 marker test is LESS accurate at confirming common ancestry than the 25 or 37 marker tests, so of course a lot more false hits will result if only 12 markers are indexed. IF your test indicates (example) 24/25 matches and you share a surname, then it is VERY likely that you have a common ancestor and are in fact cousins (or even siblings, a very close cousin...). If you match 11/12 with another person, and the surnames do not match, then you should REALLY think it is NOT a match, and do more research. (even if you match 12/12 and do not share a surname, it is likely you are not related, unless someone had an "out of wedlock event" or adoptions occurred.
NOTE: The Y-Chromosome test can only be done on MALES, Females have no Y-Chromosome. Y-Chromosomes are passed from Father to son. This means that ONLY father to son relationships can be tracked by this testing. ONLY The Y-Chromosome Tests indicate lineage for Genealogical purposes, X-Chromosome and Mitochondrial dna tests may be done, but they do not necessarily indicate lineage connections. IF you are a female and wish to see where you stand, you will need a "stand-in" from your father's line, who is male and shares his surname, who is a known relationship to him (your brother, cousin, uncle) THEIR results would be identical (99.999+%) to yours if you had a Y-Chromosome.
Y-chromosomes are passed father to son, so they can only follow ONE line of descent, fortunately that line usually keeps the surname, so is trackable by conventional research. DNA testing in this manner isn't as accurate as a Paternity test, but may be used to support existing research.
